Heavy rains have no effect on water woes

Published: Tuesday | December 29, 2009

Water levels at the two main storage facilities serving Kingston and St Andrew remain virtually unchanged despite the recent heavy rains.

According to the National Water Commission (NWC), the Mona Dam now has 49 per cent of its 809-million gallon capacity, up from 47 per cent before the rains, while Hermitage Dam is at 67 per cent of its 323-million gallon capacity - a three per cent increase.

As a result, NWC's Public Relations Manager, Charles Buchanan, said water restrictions, which were eased in the Corporate Area over the Christmas holidays, have been put back into effect.

"Based on where you (customer) are on the system, you will have periods of no water, low water or a combination of the two," said Buchanan, who did not say which communities would be affected.

He also disclosed that water levels in Portland, St Mary, St Ann, St Thomas, St Catherine, Clarendon and St Elizabeth were also on the decline because the storage facilities in these parishes are experiencing less than the required daily inflows.
