Dam Head road deaths due to indiscipline, say police

The St Catherine North Traffic Department has identified indiscipline as the major contributing factor in the deaths of two men along Dam Head main road about 6:30 a.m. yesterday.

Those killed are Ryan Salmon, 22, and 25-year-old Damon Levy, both of Windsor Heights, Central Village, St Catherine.

Sergeant Stanley Gardener said Salmon was driving a 1995 Suzuki Swift motor car towards Spanish Town with Levy on board.

On reaching about 400 metres from Angels roundabout, the Swift ran into the path of an oncoming Mitsubishi Pajero sports utility vehicle, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact extensively damaged both vehicles, killing Levy and Salmon. The driver of the Pajero was taken to Spanish Town Hospital and admitted.

Deaths in division

The deaths of the two brought to 36 the number of people killed in the division, seven more than the corresponding period last year.

"Most of the traffic accidents occurred because of indiscipline on the streets. That is why there is a spike in road fatalities," Gardener said.

Ten days earlier, 56-year-old Patrick Allen; Paul Nelson, 45; and 50-year-old Wesley Sankaar of Spanish Town Road addresses were killed after a Ford Explorer overturned along the Spanish Town leg of Highway 2000.

The recent deaths took the country's traffic fatalities to 324 since the start of the year.

The St Catherine North Traffic Department is investigating.
