Waterhouse coach Geoffrey Maxwell says now that his team is playing true to potential, he is confident it can win the Digicel Premier League.
Speaking after his team's 1-0 win over Portmore United at Drewsland on Sunday - their sixth in their last eight games - Maxwell said his charges have been playing good football and, with only six points separating his team and leaders Harbour View, he is looking toward an ideal end to the season.
"I said it from the 14th of August that Waterhouse can win the league, as we have the players and talent, and I am sticking to that statement," said a confident-sounding Maxwell after Sunday's victory, which was set up by a clinical Kevin Lamey strike at the 37th minute.
Happy with form
"I think we have have a very good squad and depth to win the championship and I am happy with the form we are showing," he added.
The victory propelled Water-house to 33 points, the same as third-place Boys' Town, who stopped neighbours Arnett Gardens 2-0 at Collie Smith Drive. Waterhouse are two behind second-place Tivoli Gardens, who lost 0-1 to Harbour View at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
Waterhouse was the better team on the day but only just as, while they dominated the crucial first half, Portmore were better in the second.
The all-important goal was a brilliant solo effort from Lamey. Latching on to a ball atop the penalty box, Lamey skilfully dismissed two defenders and, with goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr advancing, he let loose a grounder that beat the custodian.
The goal brought numerous shouts of 'Firehouse!' and condemned Portmore to their sixth defeat in seven matches.
The men from the Sunshine City are in seventh position on 21 points.
"I thought though we did not win my team played well, especially in the second half," said losing coach Linval Dixon.
"But I am not one for giving up. I think we have very good players and, with 19 games to go, what we need to do is just to start grinding out results and winning," he added.
